Project summary:

In the field of organic electronics there exists a large demand for electrochemically active materials, allowing the construction of low cost and environmental-friendly devices. Such materials can be used in organic field effect transistors (OLEDs), organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic solar cells (OSCs) and sensors. Therefore, in recent years, much research attention has been paid to the preparation of new compounds with controlled optical properties (energy gap) and electron (the position of HOMO and LUMO levels). HOMO and LUMO levels of organic semiconductors and, by consequence, their optical and redox properties as well as their air stability in device operating conditions, can be precisely tuned by appropriate balance between electron accepting and electron donating groups present in the molecule (macromolecules). In this view semiconductors properties can be controlled using the  building blocks concept. Applying this strategy a series of low and high molecular weight organic semiconductors have been synthesized so far.
The main goal of this project is to synthesize and investigate the spectroscopic, electrochemical and electrical transport properties of a new class of organic semiconductors namely arylene bisimides N- or core-functionalized with 4H-dithieno[3,2-b;2’,3’-d]pyrrole(DTP) substituents. It is seems they could be suitable materials for the fabrication of organic field effect transistors (OFETs) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this project it is expected to focus on two following scientific problems:
A) the design, synthesis and characterization of a new class of organic semiconductors namely arylene bisimides N- or core-functionalized with 4H-dithieno[3,2-b;2’,3’-d]pyrrole(DTP) substituents (NBIDTP);
B) the design, fabrication and testing of OFET and OLED devices based on NBIDTP materials.
The development of new, solution-processable organic electroactive materials should allow for changing technology of electronic components. They can be used in the methods herein simpler, cheaper and less energy consuming than in the case of silicon electronics.
