Project summary:

Rationale use and management of soil and water application of efficient monitoring system for identification of areas at risk and for undertaking timely preventive/ interception actions.Within the project, the optimized two-stage monitoring techniques based on integrated geophysical-geochemical methods for assessment of soil quality and risk to sustainability of soil and ground water will be developed. At the first stage, fast, simple and costeffective on-site screening techniques based on geophysical methods would serve as an early warning system that could be applied in a local and large regional scale. At the second stage, on the basis of the pre-screening, a relevant dense geochemical monitoring network can be applied in the areas of identified elevated risk of pollution with Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs). Such solution would significantly reduce the required number of samples and chemical analyses, and consequently costs of the environmental impact assessment and increase its spatial resolution. One of the aim of the study is also to prove feasibility and cost-efficiency of preventive/interception measures undertaken at an identified early stage of pollution. The overall purpose of the project is to provide local and regional stakeholders and decision makers involved in land use planning and management of soil and water resources with a viable standardized easy-to-use methodology for soil and groundwater pollution status evaluation and assessment of a risk to sustainability, as early warning monitoring system for timely risk prevention with use of feasible measures.
